I am a huge proponent of free hand pedicle screw insertion technique. However, I started using navigation in 2016 for selected dysplatic apical region of the curve, early onset scoliosis, PSO, hemi vertebra resection. In the beginning it used to delay my usual flow but as everyone in the team got used to it, workflow started to notice the difference.
It is a great teaching tool however I would not teach my fellow, navigation technique unless they are pretty comfortable with free hand technique. Enabling technology should enable us to enhance our surgical performance, while on the other hand it should not hinder one’s performance.
I have heard anecdotes of some surgeons around the globe abandoning procedure in the middle or not starting the procedure because of navigation not working or not being available. Is that reasonable?
It would be my great privilege to hear from international guest speakers Dr Rajiv Sethi and Mr Patrick Kiely
