When I was told I was being made redundant, I knew it was coming. Still, seeing it confirmed in writing hit differently. For days, I avoided my emails. I told myself I needed space to process it. But, honestly? I just didn't want to fully accept what it meant. That hesitation surprised me. I work with managers. I coach on steadiness under pressure. I understand how change works in organisations. And yet, I still paused. That moment taught me something vital: Steadiness isn't the absence of emotion. It's what you do after the emotion hits. Confidence doesn't mean feeling calm right away. It means choosing your response once the initial shock fades. For me, that meant opening the emails, even though they were a few days late, asking direct questions, and choosing to focus on what I could control rather than replaying what had already happened. Those first actions mattered. They moved me from reacting to repositioning. When change hits, even experienced pros hesitate. That's normal. What's NOT neutral is what happens next. The first 72 hours of change often set the tone for how others see you - and how you see yourself. Do you withdraw, or regain clarity? Do you avoid, or ask? Those early decisions quietly shape your authority. And most of the time, no one sees the internal pause.
