but CAS, Exploratorium, Lawrence Hall, and even CHM, they communicate "this is a place to warehouse knowledge, store it away, and maybe give you vague glimpses, but certainly not a place to exalt in it"
CHM does this for all of its computers, even the ones that you can buy on eBay right now. god forbid anyone touch an Altair 8800
but even when these science museums make interactive exhibits, like the Exploratorium does, the interactivity puts the _science_ behind glass
CAS is a large modernist hall with uninspired interiors. Exploratorium is a warehouse on a pier. Lawrence Hall is a brutalist bunker.
these kinds of architecture are fine, i enjoy them for lots of things
but they're not temples to inspire awe and wonder
you couldn't go to the exploratorium and learn how, i dunno, electricity works, or something. you can see it do cool things, but you can never _learn_ there
additionally, none of these buildings is an awe inspiring temple to achievement and wonder
everything that people are suggesting -- the existing bay area science stuff like CAS, Exploratorium, or Lawrence Hall -- is just woefully incomparable. these places just don't even remotely hold a candle to the grandeur of AMNH or Griffin
I didnt know this about the palace of fine arts. Been many times. From frying balls on the column bases as a high schooler to concerts to a Dad taking his boys to the Exploratorium.
If you have the time, visit the Palace of Fine Arts, a park with neoclassical architecture built to show off for the 1915 World Fair.
The Exploratorium, Underwater World, and the San Francisco Aquarium are also pretty neat if you are into that kind of stuff.

I think that is Embarcadero. Just North of that is the Exploratorium. North of that was Fisherman’s Wharf. Then Ghirradelli Square. When I moved there in 2015 we took our kids. By the time I left in 2021 I would not go there alone much less take my family.
Sad.
