Seattle Coach Realigning His Starters In Wake Of Scandal
SEATTLE, Wash. (UPI) Seattle University basketball Coach Bob Boyd said Thursday the first he knew of the point shaving scandal involving two of his varsity players was when he was called to the University president's office and saw "FBI agents sitting there.” "I was shocked beyond belief," the coach said. “Father Lemieux (Very Rev. A. A. Lemieuxi. president. asked me to come to his office at 10 a. m..” Boyd said. “When I entered his office, there were FBI agents sitting there.” The FBI Wednesday night arrested starting guard Charlie Williams and utility guard Peller Phillips. Agents in Chicago arrested Leo Casale, accused of conspiring with Williams and Phillips to control the point spread in a basketball game. As a result of the arrests, Wednesday’s regular practice session was cancelled. Boyd began to realign his starting five with the No. 1 sparkplug in the Seattle Chieftains' fastbreaking attack missing. Williams and Phillips were expelled from school, and Thursday the university expelled reserve center L. J. Wheeler on grounds he knew of the alleged bribery-point shaving conspiracy and failed to report it.
