Should you go 9–5, freelance, or open a studio? I’ve done all three. Here’s what I learned.
9–5 (the “safe” start)
Great if you’re new or have no gear. Low pay, but you get access to expensive cameras, client networks, and mistakes you don’t pay for. Learn how they price, pitch, and handle angry clients. Then exit when you’ve outgrown it.
Freelancing
Don’t rush into a rental studio. Income is feast or famine. An office lease will eat you alive on dry months. Start at home, rent by the hour when needed. Also, don’t rush to register a fancy company name. Clients trust a face, not an unknown business. Build YOU as a brand first.
Own studio
Only when you have two things: a client list that follows you, AND consistent income that covers your bills. Then get the space, get the gear. Your clients already know you, so they’ll come.
Summary
Work for someone to learn. Freelance to grow. Open a studio only when your name alone brings in the cheques. Do it out of order, and you’ll learn the hard way (like most of us did).
Till then? Stay flexible.
