Today's Senate Committee Report: "Canada on Fire" sparks an important conversation about improving wildfire preparation. #ClimateProofCanada particularly echoes the recommendation to include adaptation measures in the 2030 National Building Code and incentivizing residents to purchase FireSmart homes. Additionally, the Senate Committee calls for a coordinated approach in response to the human and health-consequences of wildfires. x.com/SenateCA/status/206469…

6,837 wildfires. 232,359 evacuees. 14.6 million hectares burned in 2023. A new report from the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry highlights the need for stronger federal investment and improved coordination to respond to Canada’s escalating wildfire crisis. Wildfires continue to displace communities across the country, with First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities facing heightened risk due to location and limited resources and infrastructure. While the report nods to risk reduction—hazard maps, Indigenous-led cultural burning, FireSmart, building codes—it understates the scale required. It also misses a key point: new housing should be steered away from wildfire risk. 👇 climateinstitute.ca/reports/…

This week some of our team joined a virtual conversation about municipal readiness and resilience when it comes to thinking about wildland fires. While we hope we don't ever have to experience this, homeowners do need to be ready and including it as part of your emergency preparedness. Taking steps today can help you tomorrow. Some things to consider: 🔥Ensure gutters are clear, dried vegetation removed and shingles remain in good shape 🔥Avoid using wood mulch next to your house, opt instead for fire resistant vegetation and rock mulch 🔥Assess your property for risks and take action to mitigate (Do you have a wooden fence attached to your house which fire could travel along? Is there an alternative product you can use for your next deck besides wood? How close are the trees and branches to your house/Do any branches touch your house or roof? What kind of plantings are best to help prevent fire?) We all share responsibility in keeping our municipality safe and our homes as ready as they can be. This is also another reminder to have your emergency kit ready to go at any time. A great resource for the public is the FireSmart Canada website at: firesmartcanada.ca/. #StratfordPEI #beprepared
