“Returning to Queen’s as a
#FirstGenerationStudent felt powerful in a way because my family sacrificed everything to give me a life that looked different from the one that they had.
“My mum and dad raised us through challenges people never see from the outside. Mum has struggled with her health for years and is a
#BreastCancerSurvivor, yet she still poured every ounce of strength she had into giving me a chance at a future she never got.
“I grew up helping to care for my brother Corey, who is
#Autistic and faces his own daily battles with the world. Being there for him shaped me as it taught me patience, responsibility and what real love looks like.
“It also made my education at Queen’s feel like even more of a blessing, as I know how hard it can be for people like Corey. It made me more grateful for my ability to be able to study and learn new things somewhere as amazing as Queen’s.
“For most of my life,
#EnglishLiterature felt like a natural choice because it was what I knew – it was safe, familiar and rooted in my love of
#Storytelling.
“However, everything changed when I began doing
#Marketing tasks at work – I felt like I’d stepped into a world that finally matched how my brain worked. It made me feel excited for the future. I wanted a career that made me feel alive, work that challenges and fulfils me. Marketing gave me the confidence to dream bigger.
“Starting over isn’t a weakness, it’s courageous. Choosing a new path means believing that your life can be more than what you once thought. You’re not starting from zero, you’re starting from experience and your future isn’t limited by where you began.
“Graduating once was life changing, but graduating twice feels like rewriting the story of my entire family.
“Being a first-generation student means carrying more weight, but it also means breaking more barriers. Walking across that stage will not feel like one person graduating – it will feel like my entire bloodline walking with me.
“It will be one of the proudest moments of my life. It will be a promise to my younger self that she was always capable, a thank you to my family for standing by me and a reminder that I turned struggle into strength.”
