🌍 Happening Now in Cape Town: A powerful step forward for Africa’s blue economy.
We’ve just kicked off the Workshop on Building the Capacity for Fisheries and Aquaculture Strategy Design—a crucial platform in Africa’s journey toward resilient, inclusive, and sustainable aquatic food systems.
Opening the event, Dr. Bernice Mclean, reminded us what’s at stake:
“Africa’s fisheries and aquaculture are not optional sectors. They are central to our food and nutrition security, to our economies, to our climate resilience—and to the livelihoods of over 12 million Africans, many of whom are women anchoring post-harvest value chains.”
Despite their significance, these sectors are still under-leveraged. Fragmented governance, limited financing, and weak alignment with broader development goals are stalling their full potential.
That’s why this workshop—supported by our partners
@au_ibar and the FishGov2 Programme—is so critical. It’s not just about policy—it’s about building the capacity to deliver impact where it matters most: in communities, ecosystems, and economies.
Why it matters:
• Aquatic foods provide 18% of Africa’s animal protein
• But per capita consumption is still less than half the global average
• Climate change, IUU fishing, and harmful subsidies threaten sustainability
• Policy frameworks exist—but they need strong implementation capacity
What’s the opportunity?
The CAADP Kampala Strategy and Action Plan (2026–2035): a bold vision to place fisheries and aquaculture at the heart of Africa’s food systems transformation.
Together with frameworks like the Policy Framework and Reform Strategy (PFRS) and the African Blue Economy Strategy, the path ahead is clear. But the journey requires partnership, leadership, and practical skills—exactly what this workshop is here to build.
