Yep, I'd say caulkin' is like "Culkin" but replace the starting "cull" with "call". Call-kin, Caulkin'. So when I say caulk, it's like that but remove the "in" from the "-kin". Call-k, caulk. I don't know about supposed to be, but I do have the accent most often considered "accent-less" by Americans. So, if you want to sound "accent-less", sure. Forvo has a few American recordings available for caulk, and the one with the most votes (albeit only 2) is what I'm describing how I'd say it. But the other two are more like "cawk"/"cock", and indeed I have heard people say it that way, just usually from other regions. forvo.com/word/caulk/ And, indeed, I wouldn't say you mispronounce, you probably just have a regional accent. Oil sounding like "soul" is not uncommon south of the Mason-Dixon.
