KMFRI scientists have been busy this month, from Science Symposium halls to the ocean floor, turning science into action! 🌊💪
Right after the WIOMSA Scientific Symposium in Mombasa, KMFRI’s scientist Dr. Juliet Karisa led a team of coral reef restoration champions straight to the south coast of Kenya to put science into practice.
In partnership with Coralive, Reefolution, and the Wasini Beach Management Unit (BMU), the team introduced innovative table nurseries to strengthen local coral reef restoration capacity. Together, they built, deployed, and stocked five coral nurseries in the Wasini Channel, designed for resilience, efficiency, and community management. These nurseries now serve as living symbols of local empowerment and reef recovery.
Building on this success, the team immediately transferred to Kuruwitu, where a new partnership with the Kuruwitu BMU, Kilifi County Fisheries Department, Kenya Fisheries Service and the KEMFSED supported fraternity is taking shape to establish another coral restoration site at Bureni reef.
It’s inspiring to see coastal communities across Kenya uniting to restore life beneath the ocean, rebuilding reefs, hope, livelihoods, and the deep connection between people and the sea that sustains them.
KMFRI remains committed to ensuring coral restoration is community-led, science-driven, and partnership-powered, for people and the ocean
