🚀 Farewell to Astronaut Jim Lovell (1928 – 2025) 🌙 We are deeply saddened to hear the news that Jim Lovell legendary NASA astronaut and commander of the Apollo 13 mission, passed away on the 7th of August in Lake Forest, Illinois, aged 97. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1928, Lovell grew up with a fascination for flight. He became a United States Navy aviator and test pilot before joining NASA as part of the second group of astronauts. Over his career, he flew on four historic space missions: ✨ Gemini 7 (1965) – A 14-day endurance mission that set a spaceflight duration record and performed the first rendezvous with another spacecraft. ✨ Gemini 12 (1966) – His second mission as commander, which perfected the techniques for spacewalking. ✨ Apollo 8 (1968) – As Command Module Pilot, Lovell became one of the first humans to orbit the Moon, witnessing Earthrise and reading from Genesis on Christmas Eve to a worldwide audience. ✨ Apollo 13 (1970) – Commanding a mission that became one of space exploration’s greatest dramas after an oxygen tank explosion crippled the spacecraft. Lovell’s calm leadership and close coordination with Mission Control transformed what could have been a tragedy into a “successful failure,” bringing the crew home safely. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1970 and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1995, Lovell’s contributions went far beyond his time in space. He co-authored the book Lost Moon, which inspired the 1995 film Apollo 13. In the movie, Tom Hanks famously portrayed him—Lovell even made a cameo appearance wearing his own Navy uniform. Lovell retired from NASA and the Navy in 1973, moving into a successful career in business while continuing to inspire new generations through public speaking and advocacy for space exploration. NASA has remembered him as “a man whose courage and calm under pressure inspired the world.” His family described him as their “hero,” known for his optimism, humour, and ability to make people believe “we could do the impossible.” Actor Tom Hanks paid tribute with the words: “Godspeed you, on this next voyage, Jim Lovell.” From the depths of space to the hearts of millions on Earth, Jim Lovell’s legacy is one of exploration, resilience, and leadership. His story will inspire for generations to come. Correct, someone posted it earlier and as this is the sort of thing that comes up from time to time it has been largely dismissed as improbable to be achieved with CNE / CNA (my area of expertise, fuck your MILINT src) - looks like someone may have finally succeeded in doing it.

because you don't pay attention to the same things I do, this has been attempted on laptops and usually failed due to safety circuits. We are talking about intentional willful and deliberate detonation of electronics here, not safety standards enforced for import.

It's not physically impossible though and it's been attempted by researchers on more than one occasion. It was just incredibly unlikely that something like what just occurred, would occur, as years of effort went into preventing precisely that in many consumer electronics.

No citation needed for the "hackers are making batteries explode!!!" claim? It's been a few hours, I'm just providing the much more likely cause other than "cyber attack doing something physically impossible"

#Representation matters. It’s awesome to see black #hamoperators do their thing on the air. My dad was one of several African Americans making waves with #NASA during the #GeminiProgram and the #ApolloProgram as a communication tech. Although he never became a ham…
