#SpikeMilligan was not only one of Britain’s most original comedy minds, he was also deeply committed to
#animalwelfare and spent years speaking out against cruelty. Behind the surreal humour and nonsense poetry was someone who genuinely struggled with the way human beings treated animals.
One of his most famous remarks on the subject was blunt and heartfelt: “I have resigned from the human race. Look at the way we treat animals.”
Milligan supported several animal charities throughout his life and often used his fame to bring attention to causes many public figures ignored at the time. Long before animal welfare became widely discussed in mainstream media, he was openly criticising blood sports, factory farming and cruelty carried out in the name of entertainment or profit.
He was particularly horrified by the Canadian seal cull. In 1981, Milligan stood outside Canada House in London holding dummy baby seals while delivering a petition containing around 190,000 signatures to the Canadian High Commissioner. The campaign drew major public attention and added pressure on the Canadian government to reduce the cull.
For Milligan, this was never about publicity or image. Friends and campaigners who worked alongside him often described him as genuinely distressed by suffering inflicted on animals. His concern appeared regularly throughout his writing too. Even within his absurd poems and comic stories there was often sympathy for creatures and criticism of human behaviour.
That feeling can be seen clearly in the quote from his book The Little Pot Boiler, where he mocked mankind’s belief that intelligence automatically meant superiority over other living things.
Milligan’s love of animals also connected to a wider sadness about the world. He had witnessed enormous suffering during the Second World War while serving in the Royal Artillery, experiences that affected him for the rest of his life. Many people who knew him believed that compassion for vulnerable animals came from the same sensitivity that shaped both his comedy and his struggles with

While Spike Milligan will always be remembered for The
