From Tokens to Knowledge: The Digital Backbone That Forms Context Graphs
Shannon's 1948 communication theory bracketed meaning entirely: "semantic aspects of communication are irrelevant to the engineering problem."
That boundary clarified what his theory measures. It also left a layer unmeasured.
Consider the word TANK. One system sees a fish tank. Another sees an armored vehicle. Transmission succeeded. Interpretation diverged. This is not a corner case in language. It is the ordinary condition of real-world semantics: words routinely accumulate multiple senses, and the correct sense depends on surrounding cues.
The bridge from data transfer to data understanding depends on the next layer up: the layer where systems decide which meaning a shared token should activate.
Context Engineering is a systems discipline that treats context as a measurable gap between communicating and decision-making systems.
A context graph shifts the meaning of a symbol from a flat label to a position inside a structure. "Tank" is not merely a string, but a node connected to neighbors that constrain interpretation: aquarium → water → fish versus armored vehicle → battlefield → platoon.
Where Shannon measured noise in transmission, a context graph measures noise in interpretation.
Ontology grounding and alignment convert ambiguous symbols into computable structures. Context telemetry turns meaning into an observable runtime signal, enabling safer AI agents, more reliable interoperability, and more defensible decisions in operational environments where ambiguity carries real costs. 🧠
Systems can make interpretation measurable when they externalize meaning into grounded graphs, quantify uncertainty over competing meanings, and expose interpretive divergence as telemetry with provenance.
That does not replace Shannon's achievement. It extends his program into the domain he bracketed, where meaning becomes the next signal that engineering learns to measure.
