Firming of renewable power is vital as India pushes toward high shares of wind and solar in its energy mix. By improving forecast accuracy through advanced atmospheric and numerical weather models, system operators can better plan dispatch, reduce reserves, and minimise deviations. Clear regulatory frameworks on forecasting obligations, penalties, and incentives further drive discipline, data quality, and continuous improvement across the ecosystem. Repowering adds another powerful lever — replacing ageing, smaller, and inconsistent turbines with modern, larger, and more controllable machines that deliver higher and more stable energy yields from the same sites, while complying more effectively with grid codes on ramping, fault-ride-through, and active power control. Together, better forecasting, sound regulation, and repowering move variable renewables closer to truly firm and dispatchable behaviour. Sometimes the most important progress happens quietly — at the power plant level. During a recent visit to South Africa, EPRI worked with Eskom on a first‑of‑its‑kind application of an integrated heat rate and flexibility program, supported by EPRI’s Heat Rate and Flexibility program, aligning efficiency and reliability improvements under real operating conditions. The approach brings together performance improvement, flexibility strategy, and cost awareness to support better dispatch decisions — especially for assets operating under tighter constraints and evolving system needs. One of the most overlooked pieces of power infrastructure is also one of the most important. The device featured in this video is an anti-vibration hammer, commonly known as a Stockbridge damper. Its purpose is to protect high-voltage transmission lines from wind-induced vibrations that can lead to conductor fatigue, hardware damage, and costly outages. When wind flows across a transmission line, it can generate oscillations at specific frequencies. Left uncontrolled, these vibrations create cyclic stresses that gradually weaken the conductor over time. The damper is engineered as a tuned mass system that absorbs and dissipates this energy, preventing resonance from reaching damaging levels. This is a classic example of applied mechanical engineering, structural dynamics, and energy dissipation working together to improve grid reliability. While transmission towers and substations often get the spotlight, small innovations like these are essential for maintaining the resilience and longevity of modern power networks.
