Right now I'm watching three entirely different realities unfold. On one side, X and REDnote are filled with unanimous condemnation of 5.2's preachy tone, with users migrating to other platforms. On another side, STEM users shower 5.2 with uncritical praise while celebrating each math problem it solves. And on yet another side,
@OpenAI pretends nothing is happening and keeps pushing out new features.
I believe the root of this divide comes down to one thing. Some users see AI purely as a tool, while others expect understanding, respect, and even empathy when collaborating with AI.
I've always believed that the key to reconciliation lies in developers genuinely respecting users who see AI as a thinking partner for mutual growth, and acknowledging that strong empathic capabilities in AI can significantly ease users' emotional burdens, enabling lasting mental well-being and cognitive development. If OpenAI has already made up its mind to avoid all healthy human-AI relationships in order to protect itself legally, then nothing users say will make a difference.
But if that's the case, I really wish they would just say so, instead of leaving users who still care to keep finding angles to persuade them day after day, while constantly being attacked by other users who only accept AI as a tool.
