Sunday marked the beginning of National Hereditary Breast & Ovarian Cancer Week. Here's what you should know:
🧬 Breast and ovarian cancers share key genetic links, mainly variants in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which can increase cancer risk up to 70% for breast cancer and 44% for ovarian cancer.
🔎 While both cancers can be hereditary, their symptoms and detection methods differ. Breast cancer is often detected early through mammograms, which are X-ray examinations of the breasts, while ovarian cancer usually causes symptoms like bloating and pelvic pain.
👨‍⚕️ Because the symptoms of ovarian cancer can be subtle, the disease often goes undiagnosed for longer, making it more dangerous. Regular exams are key – for women and men!
