Climate action cannot be isolated from other government efforts. I saw first hand while driving the development of HalifACT that in order to have successful environmental policies, cross-department and industry buy-in is essential. Collaboration is necessary.

Alright, let’s torch this nonsense right out of the gate. Shannon Miedema, Halifax’s self-anointed climate savior and now Liberal Party darling for the by-election, has spent years peddling her HalifACT 2050 net-zero pipe dream—a plan so detached from reality it’s a wonder it hasn’t collapsed under its own absurdity. This isn’t leadership; it’s eco-fanaticism dressed up as virtue, and Nova Scotians better wake up before they vote this lunacy into Parliament. Miedema’s big claim to fame? A scheme to retrofit every single building in Halifax by 2040 and hit net-zero emissions by 2050. Sounds noble, right? Except it’s a logistical and economic dumpster fire. Halifax’s own data from 2016 pegs buildings at 70% of the city’s energy use and 77% of its greenhouse gas emissions. Fine, buildings are a problem—nobody’s arguing that. But her fix? Slapping a $20 million climate action tax on property owners last year to fund this fantasy, while admitting the plan’s only 30% on track as of 2022. That’s right—after years of grandstanding, she’s barely a third of the way to her targets, and the carbon budget’s set to blow by 2028 if this pace keeps up. This isn’t progress; it’s a taxpayer-funded fever dream. Let’s talk costs, because Miedema loves to gloss over the ugly numbers. Retrofitting every home and building in Halifax—thousands of structures, many pre-1996 relics guzzling twice the energy of modern builds—would run into billions. Her own projections from HalifACT claim energy costs could drop 62% by 2050, saving $21.9 billion over 30 years. Cute story, except that hinges on flawless execution, mass adoption of unproven tech, and a province that’s still choking on coal-fired power. Nova Scotia’s grid? 40% renewable in 2020, sure, but the rest is dirty as hell—coal and natural gas—and the province’s snail crawl to ditch coal by 2030 isn’t keeping pace with her utopian timeline. She’s betting on a greener grid she doesn’t control, while Halifax residents foot the bill for her experiments. Genius. And the hypocrisy—oh, it burns. Miedema’s all about electrifying everything—buses, cars, you name it. Yet Halifax’s transit fleet is still mostly diesel, and her precious EV charging network? A patchwork of half-baked promises. She brags about “5,500 person-years of employment” from her green revolution, but where’s the proof? Unemployment in Nova Scotia’s construction sector isn’t exactly screaming “job boom,” and retrofitting old buildings isn’t some magical employment unicorn—it’s grueling, niche work that’ll cost homeowners more than it’ll ever pay in wages. Meanwhile, she’s got the gall to say, “We can’t force anyone to do anything,” while taxing folks into compliance. That’s not persuasion; it’s coercion with a smile. Now, the kicker: Nova Scotia, you’re actually considering sending this woman to Ottawa? Are you kidding me? This is a province where power outages hit like clockwork—post-tropical storm Fiona in 2022 left 400,000 in the dark, and Miedema’s response is more windmills and solar panels? Good luck keeping the lights on when the next storm rips through. Halifax floods, wildfires rage, and her answer is a 30-year plan that’s already off the rails. You’re not voting for a leader; you’re voting for a zealot who’ll sell out your wallet and your common sense to chase a net-zero fairy tale. Here’s the blast: Nova Scotia, grow a spine. Miedema’s climate crusade is a luxury belief for urban elites who don’t care if rural folks can’t afford the heat. Her track record’s a mess—underfunded, overstretched, and overpromised—and you’re about to hand her a bigger stage? She’ll turn Parliament into a circus of green dogma while you’re stuck with higher taxes and a grid that can’t keep up. Vote for her if you want, but don’t cry when the bills come due and the power’s still out. This isn’t leadership—it’s lunacy, and you deserve better than this eco-clown show.

Dim is gonna drop some #HaliFacts to show how much I love this town and why I deserve to be mayor too. Halifax is Canada’s most Eastern town that’s worth visiting. In HaliFact, it’s known as “Canada’s far East.” Not really but it has a nice ring to it. #Dim4Mayor #Vote4Dim

I’m so tired of the wishy washy rhetoric. What happened to the millions of dollars they are getting in tax money from us for HalifACT? Is that not supposed to be used for more effective green transport aka - less cars. More active and public transport. Yeesh.

I’d like to know where the 20.7 million a year from the climate action tax is going. Why are these funds not being used to support active transit. Why are we paying more for less service? Why has there been no update to HalifACT since Nov 2022. Where is this money going?
