Safe and Supported: Invest in Health Workers
On
#FrontlineFriday, and as World Health Workers Week took place last week, I join and endorse the Frontline Health Workers Coalition
@FHWCoalition in validating their continued mission to bring together advocates, health workers, leaders, and communities around the world to call for greater funding and faster implementation of commitments to protect and support health workers, especially in translating policies and promises into long-term investments for the health workforce and systems, as doing so not only strengthens the health of our nation, but yields additional developmental benefits.
The
@wellbeingafrica Foundation amplifies and actualises safely supporting frontline health workers as the backbone of resilient health systems, as our
#WBFA and
#NANNMS midwives, nurses, and community health workers, deliver primary care, essential immunisations, prevent epidemics, manage chronic disease, reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases and respond to climate change, amongst more, through health, social and behaviour change frontline programmatic community engagement.
The global shortage of health workers is a threat to reaching
#UHC, and the
@WHO predicts a shortage of at least 10 million health workers by 2030, with Africa bearing nearly 50% of the shortage. Therefore, core to the WBFA mission is to ensure all health workers are well-trained with the opportunity to upskill, are protected in their roles and rightly compensated, especially to mitigate brain drain, so that our investments can reach
#SDG targets.
By advocating for the implementation of the
@WHOAFRO Africa Health Workforce Investment Charter which will be launched this May at
#WHA77, governments and partners can make concrete commitments with tangible goals, saving millions of lives. Each day at the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, skilled health workers provide promotive, preventive, curative and palliative health services in times of crisis and calm, making them key to
#WellbeingforAll.
