In the UK, medical cannabis was legalised for prescription use on 1 November 2018 after years of campaigning by families whose children were suffering from severe, treatment‑resistant epilepsy.
Two names that became central to that change were Billy Caldwell and Alfie Dingley, young boys whose lives were transformed by cannabis‑based medicine when nothing else worked. Their mothers fought tirelessly, travelling abroad for treatment and challenging legal barriers to secure access that is now available under prescription.
Medical cannabis isn’t a cure, but for some people with epilepsy it can significantly reduce seizure frequency and improve quality of life, especially when conventional medications have failed. 🌿
