I don’t want to say you have failed if, in your 30s, it has never crossed your mind to get land so you can own a house one day. But at 30, you should have started putting a 10-year plan in place to build a house before you clock 40.
If you're a middle-income earner and you are paying ₦600,000 rent in Lagos, you can build your own house with a simple 10-year plan.
Some people would wonder, "Shey within that 10 years, Omo Onile will not grab the land back?"
That is one of the biggest fears many people have about buying land.
The solution is simple.
Get land from genuine estate companies that focus on low- and middle-income earners. Your land remains secured as long as you complete your payment and obtain the necessary documentation.
A lot of people do land banking with such companies.
If the opportunity to own land comes your way, please don't ignore it.
Instead, do these two simple things that can help you become a landowner sooner than you think.
Do not let "That place is too far" hold you back.
Do not let "That place is bush" hold you back.
Do not let "Who will go and live there?" hold you back.
But let me tell you something.
Twenty years ago, many people said those same words about land opportunities in Ayobo and Sangotedo that they can no longer afford today.
At that time, they had the money, but they never imagined those places would become this developed.
If you do not buy where people are telling you to buy today, in the next 10, 15, or 20 years, you may return to that same place you rejected and start looking for a house to rent there.
Many of the places where people struggle to rent houses today were once places nobody wanted to buy land.
If you don't want that to become your story, do these two things.
First, ask if you can pay in instalments.
Many landowners and real estate companies understand that not everybody can pay at once. That is why they provide flexible payment plans to help low- and middle-income earners become landowners.
We do that too in our company.
Don't assume you cannot afford land until you have asked about instalment options.
Sometimes, what looks impossible can become achievable when payment is spread over time.
Second, join an Ajo or thrift contribution. Or join cooperative society
Many people underestimate how powerful Ajo can be.
It has helped thousands of people buy land, build houses, start businesses, and solve important family needs.
Some people contribute ₦10,000 every two weeks.
Some do ₦50,000 monthly.
Some even contribute more.
Before you know it, you have raised enough money for a deposit or even full payment for a plot of land.
I personally know people who used Ajo money to buy land and later build their own houses.
Give it a try
