Don’t Get Mad! EVERYONE wants something for nothing…
Whenever a friend asks for my help, my answer is always a resounding "yes!"
Whether it's painting a fence, moving boxes, or fixing a mower, you can count on me. I'm here to lend a hand - and it won't cost you a dime!
However, when it comes to business, the dynamics change. If I were being paid to paint a fence and then asked you to assist me, it would only be fair for me to compensate you. It wouldn't be right to expect you to work for free on a job that's putting money in my pocket. After all, what kind of friend would do that?
That's why it feels quite off-putting when strangers request your time and expertise without offering fair compensation. Have you ever experienced this? For me, these requests often involve giving a speech to their employees or a private group, all under the guise of "collaboration" or offering "exposure."
Since I wouldn't dream of asking my loved ones for free labor that I intend to monetize, these requests can be quite irritating.
In moments like these, adopting the mindset that "everyone loves free stuff" can help me maintain composure and approach the situation rationally.
The truth is, people do love freebies, and my time, labor, and expertise are no exception. So, it's simply up to me to politely decline.
Here's one of the scripts my team and I use when respectfully declining requests for free labor:
"We appreciate the opportunity to participate in your event and engage with your audience. While we understand your budget constraints, it's our policy to charge a fee for Dr. Brad's time and expertise. We wish you all the best."
Instead of getting upset when people expect you to work for free, remember that everyone loves free stuff!
However, when someone seeks to profit off your time, labor, and expertise without compensating you appropriately, it's perfectly acceptable to graciously decline.
