제가 기계공학도로서 대학원을 다니며 전공한 분야는 '유한요소해석과 그에 기반한 최적화'입니다. 그중 유한요소법에 대해 쉽게 설명해 드릴께요. 기계공학에서 유한요소해석의 주된 목적은 실제 프로토타입을 제작하기 전, 가상 환경에서 설계의 안정성과 성능을 미리 검증하기 위함입니다. 실제로 제가 대학원에서 수행한 산학협력 프로젝트에서 아무리 개선해도 계속 기대수명에 미치기 전에 계속 파손되던 특정 부품을 유한요소해석과 그에 기반한 형상최적화 기법으로 최적의 형상과 치수를 찾아 문제를 해결한 경험이 있습니다. 음... 구체적인 원리는 흥미를 떨어뜨릴 테니 최대한 쉽게 설명 해볼께요. 작업과정을 예시로 드는게 쉬울것 같네요. 일단 제품의 CAD 모델로 부터 시작합니다. 그리고 해당 CAD 모델을 작은 요소로 쪼게요. 참고 사진 처럼요. 그리고 특정한 점, 선, 면 등에 물리적 조건을 부여합니다. 특정면을 고정하고, 특정 점에 힘을 부여하고 하는 식으로요. 이어 컴퓨터는 앞서 쪼겐 요소들이 연결되는 꼭짓점의 위치 변화를 계산한답니다. (이걸 사용해요. [K]{u}={F}, 그 스프링 공식 맞습니다. 탄성계수 * 변위 = 힘) 결과로 얻을 수 있는 건 해당 경계조건과 하중으로부터 구조물에 생기는 변화입니다. 변형/응력(구조물에 변형을 일으키는 힘?이라고 생각하면 쉽습니다.) 등에 대한 정보를 얻을 수 있답니다. 이러한 유한 요소 해석을 수행하는 주요 프로그램으로는 제가 써본것으로만 HyperWorks, ABAQUS, Nastran, Comsol 등이 있습니다. 개인적으로는 HyperWorks를 매우 선호한답니다. 하지만 위에 소개한 상용 소프트웨어들은 라이선스 비용이 엄청 비싸다는 단점이 있습니다. 학교를 떠난 저로서는 도저히 감당할 수 없는 비용이죠. 그래서 저는 오픈소스 소프트웨어들을 탐구하기 시작했답니다. 그리고 앞으로 제가 다룰 컨텐츠에서는 오픈소스에 기반한 FEA와 그에 기반한 최적설계를 다룰까 해요.
