Anti-Tampering Kernel Driver Deep Dive
We have found an interesting WHQL-signed vulnerable kernel driver that protects processes from memory inspection using ObCallbacks.
The driver's SpcSpOpusInfo field identifies the publisher as 株式会社ＤＮＰハイパーテック (DNP Hypertech Corporation), suggesting this is part of CrackProof for Windows - a commercial anti-tampering solution.
Being WHQL-signed, this driver is a prime candidate for BYOVD (Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver) attacks - malware can drop and load it to shield itself from EDR memory scanning and injection-based detection.
How it works
- Registers ObPreOperationCallback on PsProcessType
- Strips DesiredAccess on OpenProcess with mask &= 0xFFFFFFC5
- Blocks: VM_READ | VM_WRITE | VM_OPERATION | CREATE_THREAD (0x3A)
- Preserves: PROCESS_TERMINATE (0x01) — taskkill still works
Anti-analysis
A flawed PID-dependent handshake is supposed to guarantee the integrity of the calling process, but the hash tables are static in .rdata and can be computed offline.
