Surely the FA cannot ignore the writing on the wall at M&TFC and have them installed in the IRLP?

Hurricane Watch Net Monitoring Hurricane Melissa Update: Saturday, October 25, 2025 @ 7:30 PM EDT (2330 UTC) The Hurricane Watch Net (HWN) is closely monitoring Hurricane Melissa, currently located south of Hispaniola and Jamaica. The storm is nearly stationary, drifting west at approximately 3 mph, and is forecast to intensify to a Category 5 hurricane within 48 hours. Heavy rainfall is already affecting southern Hispaniola, causing life-threatening flooding and mudslides. Similar conditions are expected in Jamaica in the coming days. Activation Status Melissa is now a hurricane and well within our 300-mile activation criteria. For now, hurricane-force winds are forecast to remain offshore until Monday. Normally, a Net activation is straightforward — we set a start time and an approximate end time. Melissa is not one of those storms. The closest comparisons are Matthew (2016) and Dorian (2019) — both stalled, high-intensity hurricanes that required flexible, around-the-clock operations for days. Since hurricane-force winds remain offshore and the storm is expected to parallel the island of Jamaica, our tentative plan is to activate Monday morning at 8:00 AM EDT (1200 UTC) on 14.325 MHz, with 40-meter operations beginning at 7:00 PM EDT (2300 UTC). Depending on propagation and storm evolution, both frequencies may operate simultaneously. If the storm changes course toward land on Sunday or Monday, HWN will activate immediately. Operational Frequencies • 20 meters: 14.325 MHz (USB) – daytime operations • 40 meters: 7.268 MHz (LSB) – nighttime operations (7:00 PM–7:00 AM EDT) Reporting & Support During activations, HWN collects and relays real-time or estimated weather data to the National Hurricane Center, including: • Maximum sustained winds and gusts • Wind direction and barometric pressure • Rainfall amounts and duration • Storm surge • Damage assessments HWN also provides Health and Welfare Traffic, and backup communications for Emergency Operations Centers, Red Cross shelters, and other agencies, sharing critical damage assessment information as requested. HWN thanks all amateur radio operators and nets for maintaining clear frequencies, enabling timely communication to those in harm’s way. Friday, October 24, 2025 @ 12:00 PM EDT (1600 UTC) The Hurricane Watch Net (HWN) is closely monitoring the development and track of Tropical Storm Melissa, currently located south of Hispaniola and Jamaica. The storm remains nearly stationary, drifting west at only 2 mph. Melissa is already producing heavy rainfall across southern Hispaniola, leading to life-threatening flooding and mudslides. As the storm edges closer to Jamaica, similar conditions are expected there in the coming days. Operation Frequencies: 20 meters: 14.325 MHz (USB) Activation time is yet to be determined. Once in operation, we will remain active as long as propagation allows before transitioning to our 40-meter frequency. 40 meters: 7.268 MHz (LSB) This is our nighttime frequency. We normally begin operations at 7:00 PM EDT (2300 UTC) and continue until 7:00 AM EDT (1100 UTC). Activation Plans: The forecast track for Melissa remains uncertain. The National Hurricane Center currently projects it to move generally west-northwest, roughly paralleling the southern coast of Jamaica for the next few days. Although the storm is moving slowly, upper-level atmospheric changes could alter its course, speed, and intensity. For now, we remain in a state of readiness. HWN members are prepared to activate at any time. Once activated, we expect a prolonged operation. Current guidance suggests Melissa could impact western Jamaica on Tuesday, cross eastern Cuba on Wednesday, and reach the Bahamas by Thursday. During activations, we collect and relay measured or estimated weather data directly to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Reports requested include: • Maximum sustained winds and gusts • Wind direction • Barometric pressure • Rainfall amounts and duration • Storm surge • Damage assessments HWN also handles Health and Welfare Traffic before, during, and after the storm in coordination with the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN). We provide backup communications to Emergency Operations Centers, Red Cross shelters, and other official agencies, and share significant damage assessment information with government and NGO partners upon request. Other Nets planning to operate include: WX4NHC – The amateur radio station at the National Hurricane Center will be active primarily on 14.325 MHz and 7.268 MHz as propagation allows. Website: wx4nhc.org/ VoIP Hurricane Net – IRLP Node 9219 / EchoLink WX-TALK Conference Node 7203 Website: voipwx.net/ Any changes to this plan will be posted on our website, hwn.org, and on our official Facebook and Twitter pages. To all official agencies – including Emergency Operations Centers, Red Cross personnel, and storm shelters in the affected areas – we stand ready to provide backup communications and forward critical damage assessment data as requested. We extend our sincere appreciation to the daily users and nets that operate on 14.325.00 MHz and 7.268.00 MHz for allowing us clear frequencies during storm operations. Your cooperation helps us serve those in harm’s way more effectively. IoT is a fundamental use case for things like BitChat, reminds me of the old days messing with IRLP (Internet Radio Linking Project) using 2m/440 amateur radios to send text over dial-up Totally Cyberpunk
