Today in music: On a Night Like This by Kylie Minogue from the 2000 album Light Years. Released 25 years ago this week, it was the Australian singer’s seventh album and first to come out in the 21st century. It came three years after Minogue released her controversial Impossible Princess album which, while commercial successful in Australia, had sold poorly in the UK, comparable to her previous albums and had been critically lambasted. Minogue was dropped by her record label in 1999 and after finding a new home, decided to bounce back with a disco-inspired pop album. The album and its music videos became instantly iconic with Minogue famously appearing in gold hotpants. It featured two of her biggest hits – Spinning Around, co-written by Paula Abdul, and On A Night Like This, which she performed at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics the same week the album was released.
