Modern LEDs destroy vision. A 60W incandescent lamp on your desk is enough to improve things substantially. Researchers conducted an experiment in a university setting in which participants worked under LED lights. 22 participants were split into two groups. One group had a 60W incandescent lamp placed on their desks. Color contrast vision improved significantly in the group given the incandescent lamps. Color contrast vision is how well you can see an object because its color differs from the background, even when the object isn’t brighter, just a different color. In this study, they tested how faint a colored letter could be (blue–yellow or red–green difference) and still be readable on a speckled/noisy background. Better color contrast vision means you can detect smaller color differences. LED lights are more energy efficient because they strip out much of the red and near-infrared light, but these wavelengths are essential for optimal vision and general health. "We demonstrate that the visual performance of those working under standard LED is significantly improved by exposure to incandescent lighting that has a spectrum similar to daylight with an extensive infrared component. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that LED lighting undermines human visual performance. The mechanism: Mitochondria (proteins and water) absorb red and infrared light, increasing ATP (energy) production. This process demands more glucose, effectively lowering blood sugar. This effect doesn’t require full-body exposure, red and infrared light penetrate deep into tissues and even through clothing to impact mitochondria. RED NIR LIGHT CUT ICU STAY BY 30% IN NEW TRIPLE-BLIND TRIAL A randomized, triple-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial published in the Journal of Biophotonics in January 2024 reports that daily photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), targeted red and near-infrared light applied to large muscle groups, meaningfully accelerated recovery in critically ill ICU patients. The intervention: a 15-minute PBMT session each day delivered through an LED “light blanket” placed over the arms and legs. ICU length of stay was reduced by ~30% compared to sham. Patients receiving PBMT improved mobility at more than twice the rate of controls, increased global muscle strength by 12% while the sham group declined by 9%, and showed a 34% improvement in handgrip strength versus a 13% decrease in controls. All secondary outcomes were statistically significant. The authors note that baseline severity scores (SAPS 3) were comparable between groups, suggesting that the observed improvements reflect the therapy rather than differences in patient status at admission. Considering the scale and relevance of the effects, if reproducible, PBMT may represent one of the most potent ICU therapies ever studied.
