A novel laboratory apparatus and test technique was developed to assess the thermal efficiency of cryogenic insulating systems under simulated field conditions of low-temperature cycling encountered in Pentane/liquified petroleum gas (LPG) storage steel spheres. In the laboratory tests, thermal gradients (ΔT) between the cooled inner surface and the insulated outer surface of steel panels were measured at different thicknesses of the insulation systems and steel panel thicknesses of 1.91 and 2.54 cm (0.75 in and 1 in). The new apparatus was found to provide an elegant and reproducible method for assessing the quality and performance of insulation systems for cryogenic service.
