“Customs resilience relies on addressing fraud, corruption and crime as a single risk continuum. When integrity, strong enforcement capacities and inter-agency information-sharing are combined, the border is better safeguarded, and countries’ economic productivity and competitiveness can be unleashed.”
The WCO Deputy Secretary General, Ricardo Treviño Chapa, shared his insights into how Customs integrity helps build upstream resilience from organized crime and power economic growth and competitiveness during the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Global Anti-Corruption and Integrity Forum (GACIF).
🔹 Strong, transparent Customs institutions are crucial for economic growth and competitiveness.
🔹 It is fundamental to protect Customs against corruption and threats from organized crime.
🔹 Through the WCO, Customs administrations have access to comprehensive guidance material and tools, as well as tailor-made technical support.
The OECD and the WCO are working together to reinforce integrity and governance in public institutions, including Customs. This cooperation, comprising participation in each other’s conferences, technical work and expert-level exchanges, helps ensure that policy debates are supported by both strong evidence and operational experience at the border.
