Long before the roar of modern fighters echoed across our skies, a distinctive butterfly-winged jet helped forge Bangladesh’s first generation of jet pilots. The Fouga CM.170 Magister, with its unmistakable silhouette and twin-tail boom, holds a special place in the story of the Bangladesh Air Force.
First entering service in 1985, the Magister marked the beginning of a new era in advanced jet training at a time when the BAF was still finding its wings. Thirteen aircraft from Germany, France, Austria, Brazil and Togo were acquired—each carrying the stories and markings of Cold War Europe, repurposed for a new mission in South Asia.
From the airstrips of Jessore BAFA to the display lawns of Dhaka’s BAF Museum, these aircraft didn’t just train pilots—they became living symbols of our aviation journey. Some, like Serial 192, found new life training engineers at MIST, while others, like D70 and 104, now stand proud in our museums for the next generation to admire.
💬 “It might not have been the fastest or most powerful, but it gave us something more important—our own pathway to jet-age self-reliance.”
🛩️ Service period: 1985–1997 (flying)
🛠️ Role: Jet trainer, light strike (secondary)
📍 Preserved examples: Jessore, Dhaka, Shamshernagar, Chattogram
