Only tone-deaf
#politicians could place their trust in a regime that killed more than 40,000 people within 48 hours during the January
#massacres. Yet many Western governments continue to treat this regime as a normal state and negotiating partner, overlooking its long record of deception,
#propaganda, and
#manipulation.
In doing so, Western governments have often appeared deeply inconsistent: publicly championing
#HumanRights and
#Freedom while simultaneously engaging with one of the world’s most dangerous kleptocratic systems.
Even now, some factions within the regime openly say they will sign agreements, wait for a new (possibly Democrat) administration in the United States, and then quietly return to business as usual once things are calm again and the regime’s crimes have faded from international memory. They simply wait until
#DonaldTrump is out of office and count on the world to forget.
But a humane and sustainable future might have been possible had the
#UnitedStates pursued policies that encouraged meaningful political change rather than contributing, directly or indirectly, to the regime’s survival.
A historical mistake of this magnitude should not be repeated, as its consequences could shape the region for generations. The roots of the current crisis stretch back decades. The policies of the late 1970s, particularly under President
#JimmyCarter, contributed to the collapse of
#Iran’s monarchy and the rise of Islamist forces whose influence continues to fuel instability across the region. A similar pattern in current diplomatic efforts could prolong the life of a regime that is dictatorial, criminal, and responsible for grave abuses against an entire nation.
