300,000 SUBMISSIONS REPRESENT MILLIONS OF ZIMBABWEANS
Recent attempts by certain groups to discredit the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB3) consultation process have exposed a deliberate distortion of facts and a misunderstanding of how public consultations work.
A misleading narrative has been circulating that only 300,000 Zimbabweans participated in the consultations. This claim is not only mathematically incorrect but also intentionally designed to undermine a process that attracted wide participation from various sectors of society.
The figure of 300,000 refers to submissions, not individual people. A submission can represent the views of an entire organization, church denomination, community group, trade union, residents' association, or civic body comprising thousands or even millions of members.
For example, when the Zimbabwe Council of Churches makes a submission, it does so on behalf of approximately 8.7 million congregants across the country. Likewise, the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops' Conference represents an estimated 3.7 million faithful. Numerous churches, labour movements, community organizations, youth groups, women's organizations, and residents' associations also participated, submitting positions that reflected the views and aspirations of their memberships.
Therefore, equating 300,000 submissions to 300,000 individuals is a gross misrepresentation of the consultation process. The reality is that those submissions collectively represent the voices of millions of Zimbabweans from all walks of life.
Citizens are urged to reject attempts to manipulate figures for political expediency. The consultation process was designed to capture organized community views as well as individual opinions, ensuring broad representation across the nation.
As Zimbabwe continues to strengthen its democratic processes, facts must prevail over misinformation. Let us get the mathematics right: 300,000 submissions do not equal 300,000 people. The submissions received represent a far wider constituency and demonstrate the extensive engagement of Zimbabweans in shaping matters of national importance.
