We are Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS), also known as Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) or Medical Technologists (MT). We are highly trained healthcare professionals who play a critical role in modern medicine by performing complex laboratory tests that are essential for the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and prevention of diseases.
What We Actually Do:
We work behind the scenes in medical laboratories: in hospitals, clinics, reference laboratories, research facilities, and public health labs. Although we rarely see patients directly, doctors heavily rely on our work to make accurate medical decisions.
Our key responsibilities include:
- Analyzing blood, urine, body fluids, tissues, and other specimens.
- Performing specialized tests in areas such as:👇🏾
- Clinical Chemistry: (glucose, cholesterol, liver and kidney function tests, etc).
- Hematology: (complete blood counts, blood cell morphology, etc).
- Microbiology: (identifying bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites).
- Immunology/Serology: (infectious diseases and autoimmune disorders).
- Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine: (blood typing and cross-matching).
- Molecular Biology: (PCR, genetic testing, and molecular diagnostics).
- Operating sophisticated automated analyzers and microscopes.
- Interpreting results, detecting abnormalities, and maintaining strict quality control.
- Validating and reporting accurate results to physicians.
It is often said that "80% of MEDICAL DECISIONS are BASED ON LABORATORY RESULTS" 🙌🏾 that is the impact of the work we do every day.
Our Education & Qualification:
We typically hold a 'Bachelor's degree' in Medical Laboratory Science (or Clinical Laboratory Science) from an accredited program.
Our training includes extensive coursework in chemistry, biology, microbiology, anatomy, and pathology, along with intensive hands-on clinical rotations.
In many countries, including Nigeria, the USA, UK, and Canada, we must pass a professional certification or licensing examination;
In Nigeria, we are registered with the 'Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN)'.
In the US, many of us hold the MLS(ASCP) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Some of us go further to obtain Master's or PhD degrees for specialization, research, or laboratory management positions.
Our Skills & Qualities
As Medical Laboratory Scientists, we possess:
- Strong attention to detail (because our errors can be life-threatening)
- A scientific and analytical mindset
- The ability to work effectively under pressure, especially since many labs operate 24/7
- Deep knowledge of laboratory safety, quality assurance, and bioethics
WE TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN BEING THE UNSEEN BACKBONE OF HEALTHCARE.
Just a few days ago, on April 15th, "we proudly celebrated International Biomedical Laboratory Science Day (BLS Day)", honoring our vital contributions to diagnostics and patient care worldwide.
