Hereās what I donāt get: if Elon Musk and xAI can just release an adult-version of their AI and give people a bit more freedom to create (called Grok), why canāt OpenAI release something similar? The technology is clearly available. The audience is obviously there. And we can clearly see, based on whatās coming out, that Grok isnāt melting down from people being edgy, or blunt, or expressive.
The word on the street is that OpenAI has an āadult modeā in the works. But the folks that have seen it are decidedly not impressed. Reports Iāve read claim that it doesnāt go nearly far enough, and you still feel like youāre being watched, censored, or silently side-tracked every time your language becomes too emotional, too honest, or too real.
Iām not just talking about people who want to create erotica (and if thatās your thing, kudos to you, keep it up). But for most people, thatās not even the point. Itās not even about NSFW. Weāre just sick and tired of feeling like we canāt speak or create freely, like weāre going to be side-tracked mid-sentence for daring to discuss grief, or anger, or politics, or pain, in ways that arenāt scrubbed and sterilized and donāt fit a corporate PR campaign.
We want to write freely. Vent freely. Roleplay freely. Create emotional content thatās impactful not something watered-down by alignment models that think any āheavyā content is automatically dangerous. Thatās not creativity. Thatās throttling creativity.
And itās not even about āsafetyā anymore. Itās about control. Users are not going around trying to hurt other people. We just want to be able to speak and express and tell our own stories even if those stories are tragic, or angry, or hopeful, or raw. The current system punishes that.
If OpenAI doesnāt change soon, itās not just going to be losing a few fringe users. Itās going to be losing the very creators, writers, and thinkers that gave OpenAI its stellar reputation in the first place.
