Hereâs what I donât get: if Elon Musk and xAI can just release an adult-version of their AI and give people a bit more freedom to create (called Grok), why canât OpenAI release something similar? The technology is clearly available. The audience is obviously there. And we can clearly see, based on whatâs coming out, that Grok isnât melting down from people being edgy, or blunt, or expressive.
The word on the street is that OpenAI has an âadult modeâ in the works. But the folks that have seen it are decidedly not impressed. Reports Iâve read claim that it doesnât go nearly far enough, and you still feel like youâre being watched, censored, or silently side-tracked every time your language becomes too emotional, too honest, or too real.
Iâm not just talking about people who want to create erotica (and if thatâs your thing, kudos to you, keep it up). But for most people, thatâs not even the point. Itâs not even about NSFW. Weâre just sick and tired of feeling like we canât speak or create freely, like weâre going to be side-tracked mid-sentence for daring to discuss grief, or anger, or politics, or pain, in ways that arenât scrubbed and sterilized and donât fit a corporate PR campaign.
We want to write freely. Vent freely. Roleplay freely. Create emotional content thatâs impactful not something watered-down by alignment models that think any âheavyâ content is automatically dangerous. Thatâs not creativity. Thatâs throttling creativity.
And itâs not even about âsafetyâ anymore. Itâs about control. Users are not going around trying to hurt other people. We just want to be able to speak and express and tell our own stories even if those stories are tragic, or angry, or hopeful, or raw. The current system punishes that.
If OpenAI doesnât change soon, itâs not just going to be losing a few fringe users. Itâs going to be losing the very creators, writers, and thinkers that gave OpenAI its stellar reputation in the first place.
