Deep within the Maryland hills lies a six million brick labyrinth built on blood and desperation. This is the Paw Paw Tunnel. In 1836, immigrant laborers began carving this three thousand foot shortcut through solid rock. Armed only with black powder and shovels, they faced grueling conditions, deadly cholera outbreaks, and violent ethnic riots. One infamous night, a mob burned a nearby lockhouse to the ground, trapping the lockkeeper inside. The tunnel finally opened over a decade late, but the darkness never truly left. Today, explorers report a heavy, suffocating atmosphere. Deep inside the pitch black interior, visitors regularly hear disembodied whispers and phantom footsteps echoing off the brick. Shadowy figures materialize out of the gloom, leaving modern travelers with the chilling certainty that the workers never truly abandoned their posts. Back in my student days I used to walk up the Oxford canal to Wolvercote every day in the summer of '74. I had a summer job as assistant lockkeeper there. We had a small boat moored on the shore to row across to the lock. The walk was heaven.
