Associating incoming BPDUs with STP instances is easy. For (R)PVST , BPDUs are 802.1Q-tagged. For MST, BPDUs are untagged but they contain dedicated fields (M-records) for the individual MSTIs. (2/5)

Lab it up and look at packet captures too understand the IST and how MSTIs interact with it. The other gotchas is to be careful with restricting VLANs on trunks for STP tuning (i.e. don't do that.. use priority instead)

Min bror, welcome! Depending on the intended number of different roots and spanning trees, I'd create the needed count of MSTIs and distribute all configurable VLANs among them. Adding a VLAN to an MSTI does not alone cause TCs to fly because the MSTI itself hasn't changed. (1/2)
