6 ways an AI agent can fail an MPP payment — and why each one is a feature, not a bug. We shipped AgentPassportCredential . A W3C Verifiable Credential that rides inside every MPP payment. Most people focused on the happy path. Let me show you the unhappy path, because that's where trust is actually built. An inference agent tries to buy storage. CATEGORY_MISMATCH. The categories are Ed25519-signed into the credential at issuance. Not a policy rule. Not a config flag. Cryptographic enforcement. The agent cannot forge a passport that covers storage if the human only approved inference. Agent passport says max 50 USDC. Merchant requires 100. AMOUNT_EXCEEDED. Spending limits live in the credential subject, verified before any money moves. The agent never even gets a 402 challenge. Human revokes the passport while the agent is mid-session. PASSPORT_REVOKED. One bit flip in StatusList2021. No webhook. No polling. No race condition. Next verification fails instantly. Someone tampers with the credential — changes the org DID, inflates the spending limit. INVALID_SIGNATURE. Ed25519 covers the entire credential. Change one byte, verification fails. Merchant's cached JWKS handles this in under 50 milliseconds. Zero server roundtrips. Agent presents a passport from an unknown authority. UNTRUSTED_ISSUER. Merchants configure trusted issuers. The check runs before signature verification. Fast fail, no wasted compute. Passport expired 3 seconds ago. PASSPORT_EXPIRED. Millisecond-precision expiry enforcement. No grace period. No "close enough." Expired means expired. Six failure modes. Six typed error codes. Zero ambiguity. Every rejection is logged, traceable, and explainable to the human who authorized the agent in the first place. This is what separates "agent identity" from "agent authentication." Authentication asks "is this agent who it claims to be?" Identity asks "who authorized this agent, for what, up to how much, and can I verify that without trusting anyone?" The answer to all four is in one credential. Offline-verifiable. Instantly revocable. Standards-based.
