I decided to share some news on Facebook/X as an efficient way to let people know about a change in my professional life. Max Out Mindset will be a bigger focus than ever but after 30 years of medical practice in the specialty of psychiatry I had an epiphany on Wednesday September 10th, 2025 that it was time to retire. In 2012, I had a similar realization that my mind/body could no longer be at it's best if I continued with intense night and weekend call and that was the last time I had a major change in the direction of my career.
It will be strange not to provide care as a physician, but it has become harder than ever to be able to take care of patients as we really have become master's at documenting in the medical chart, and less and less time involves actually helping someone. I calculated that I provided some type of care to more than 300,000 people during my career. I hope those that I crossed paths know that I gave it my best efforts and it's now time to embrace the next stage of life.
Luckily, my professional life is not over as I have decided to devote my full efforts to the area in which I am most passsionate-elite mindset training and working with my partners at Max Out Mindset to continue to work with some of coolest teams, athletes, coaches and businesses around the country from the professional ranks to high school. There is so much more to accomplish to help with education about mental health in high performers, assisting with strategies for mental well-being and to help those train mindset to max out in life and sport.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me in my career and all those that I worked side-by-side with everyday in North Dakota and Nebraska to try and make a difference. I learned early on that it was the nurses, therapists/counselors, social workers and aides that made things run smoothly and were the key to great medical care--and I was smart enough to embrace their intelligence and their high levels of compassion. To all of you I say thank you!!
