Finish the Job For nearly a decade, millions of Iranians have repeatedly risked their freedom and their lives to reject the Islamic Republic—from the nationwide protests of 2017–2018, to the November 2019 uprising, to the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, to now national uprising, unprecedented number of Iranians rose up to change regime to face bullets before their protest. All along The regime’s answer has never been reform. It has been massacre, arrests, executions, torture, internet shutdowns, and repression. Some claim maximum pressure failed because the regime survived. But survival is not success. The real question is whether pressure limited the regime’s ability to fund repression at home and destabilization abroad. When pressure increased, the regime’s resources shrank. When pressure eased, Islamic Republic regained breathing room. Authoritarian systems rarely change because they are persuaded. They change when maintaining the status quo becomes more costly than transformation. The Iranian people have already paid an extraordinary price for freedom.
