Delhi’s 10 lakh street dogs are going high-tech!
Microchipped, tracked, and vaccinated—this ₹900 crore plan aims to make the city safer for humans and dogs.
The initiative aims to tackle the rising number of dog bite incidents (26,334 cases this year) and reported 49 rabies cases.
The programme will involve injecting microchips under the skin of each dog, storing crucial data including vaccination and sterilisation history.
Handheld scanners will be used to monitor the animals in real time. To achieve the target, approximately 1,370 dogs will need to be microchipped daily.
Microchipping is just one part of a bigger plan:
✅ City-wide dog census
✅ Digital vaccination tracking
✅ School awareness campaigns
✅ Mandatory registration for pet shops
Partnering with UNDP, Delhi will also roll out a State Action Plan on Rabies, using data to monitor and manage the city’s stray dog population, which has jumped from ~1.9 lakh in 2016 to an estimated 1 million today.
Paired with mass vaccination and sterilisation drives, Delhi could become a model for humane, data-driven urban animal welfare.
What do you think—should every city follow suit?
