Uttar Pradesh Imposes 'Life Imprisonment' on Stray Dogs Biting Humans Twice 🐕.
In a bold move to tackle the rising menace of stray dog attacks, the Uttar Pradesh government has introduced stringent guidelines, effectively sentencing repeat offenders to 'life imprisonment' in animal shelters.
🏥 Issued on September 10, 2025, by Principal Secretary Amrit Abhijat, the order directs civic bodies across rural and urban areas to manage aggressive strays amid a surge in bites—over 4,000 incidents monthly in Prayagraj alone, where the dog population exceeds 1.15 lakh.
Under the policy, if a stray bites a human without provocation—verified by a three-member committee including veterinary officers—the dog will be captured and sent to the nearest animal centre.
For the first offence, it faces 10 days of observation, sterilization (if needed), microchipping for tracking, and behavioral assessment before release.
😠 Repeat unprovoked attacks trigger lifelong confinement unless the dog is adopted, with adopters signing affidavits for permanent care and no street release.
This follows a Supreme Court directive on sheltering strays in Delhi-NCR, emphasizing humane yet firm control to protect public safety while curbing rabies spread.
Animal welfare groups applaud the non-lethal approach but urge more sterilization drives, as critics fear overcrowded shelters.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's administration views it as a step toward safer streets, potentially setting a precedent for other states grappling with urban stray issues. 📋
