Seventeen-year-olds Victoria Ou and Justin Huang from College Park High School in Texas developed a groundbreaking filtration system that uses ultrasonic waves to remove microplastics from water. Their device achieved a removal rate of 84% to 94% in lab tests, offering a promising solution to a pervasive environmental issue. Inspired by a visit to a water treatment plant, they aimed to address the challenges in removing microplastics from wastewater. Their innovation earned them the $50,000 Gordon E. Moore Award at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair.
