Non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS), referred to as artificial or low-calorie sweeteners, are substances that add sweetness to food without adding many or any calories. These sweeteners are frequently used as sugar alternatives to cut calories, particularly while managing metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and obesity. Since they are much sweeter than sugar, very tiny amounts are required to get the same sweetness.
The acceptable daily intake (ADI) of food additives, such as non-nutritive sweeteners, is the quantity that can be ingested daily for the duration of a lifetime without causing a significant danger to health. It is measured in mg/kg bw/day, or milligrams per kilogram of body weight each day.

𝟏] 𝐀𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐞 - Approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar. Commonly used in diet sodas, yogurt, and chewing gum. Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI): 40 mg/kg body weight.
𝟐] 𝐒𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧 - 300-400 times sweeter than sugar. Used in soft drinks, baked goods, and canned foods. ADI: 5 mg/kg body weight.
𝟑] 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞 - 600 times sweeter than sugar. Often found in baked goods, beverages, and sugar-free products. ADI: 15 mg/kg body weight.
𝟒] 𝐀𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦 (𝐀𝐜𝐞-𝐊) - 200 times sweeter than sugar. Used in baked goods, beverages, and sugar-free candies. ADI: 15 mg/kg body weight.
The ADI is established by regulatory agencies like the 𝐅𝐃𝐀 (𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐫𝐮𝐠 𝐀𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧) 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐅𝐒𝐀 (𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲) based on comprehensive toxicological studies.
For example, if the ADI for sucralose is 15 mg/kg body weight, an individual weighing 70 kg (about 154 pounds) could consume up to 1050mg of sucralose per day without health risks. This is equivalent to about 87 cans of Sugar-free carbonated beverages containing sucralose, well above typical consumption levels.
While non-nutritive sweeteners are considered safe for general use within these limits, it's important to note that individual tolerances can vary, and some individuals may experience digestive discomfort or hypersensitivity to specific sweeteners.
