non-self-descriptivity: the chunking algo, the chunk size and the leaf node encoding can't be inferred from the CID. this is especially ridiculous because IPFS and the Multicodec standard (which defines CID formats) are both developed by the same company, Protocol Labs.

If you are going to migrate to a new key format, it should probably be COSE Key. There is no benefit of multibase keys in json over jwk... We added NIST curves to the multicodec registry, and implemented key format translation... Speaking from experience, it's not worth it...

Thanks for the info. Seems there are different initial parameters, hence the different outputs between the two. I'm trying to do a "crazy thing" and alas the multicodec library doesn't understand SHA-512Half. But hopefully I can get higher level to truncate SHA-512

In fact all codec available in the multicodec lib are supported. They are encode in utf-8 by default, but it's really easy to define a custom encoding for any given codec.
