A precocious Kauri. She's only young but she's grown two female cones this summer. I say 'she' from natural bias but Kauri are hermaphrodite, male cones look like fat cigars.

I was taken to Puketi Forest today to walk among giants - our iconic Kauri tree. What a wonderful day! More pics to follow....

I meant to add this juvenile celery pine - the one I took cuttings from - to show you what she is aiming at The foliage and tiny male and female cones are lovely ๐

Wonderful idea! I can recommend it after 23 years planting on my own property in the Far North, described in The Five Acre Forest, with the deep-time history of our extraordinary sand country landscape.

Busy day with a visitor and then fitting in various jobs but I remembered your #flowersonfriday and popped out to photograph the pink manuka which is looking gorgeous ๐
#flowers#NZNativeTrees
From the archive for #flowersonfriday because it's a dull day - exquisite flowers of our rewarewa (Knightia excelsa, NZ honeysuckle).

Our kohekohe (Dysoxylum spectabile) is still only in tight little buds on the branches, but this is what I'm looking forward to ๐คIn traditional medicine, a decoction of bark & leaves were drunk as a tonic - to me, to see the flowers is a tonic ๐

Red-leaved akeake bear pink pink seeds; the seeds of green akeake are light green. The bark of both is tan coloured and, when adult, is shed in long strips.
(Dodonaea viscosa)
#NZNativeTrees
A young tough pioneer, akeake, looking pretty in the gentle light that filtered through the clouds today. These are not pink flowers, they are winged seeds. The flowers (last pic) are the size of a pinhead.
