Why can't 𝕏 ever release a product and get it right from the start? It feels like every new product 𝕏 rolls out has obvious flaws and glitches baked in from day one.
Take the new Handle Marketplace and “premium handle” program.
On paper, it sounds great: upgrade to Premium , request a cleaner or more “brandable” handle, and level up your account. But there’s a huge flaw in how it’s implemented.
If you change from your old handle to one of these new premium handles, your old @ instantly turns into what looks like a dead account. Any backlinks you’ve built over the years, any branding you’ve done, any watermarks you’ve put on your videos, screenshots, or posts, all of that now points people to an “account doesn’t exist” page.
⚠️That’s a serious flaw.
And here’s the wild part: 𝕏 doesn’t even free up that old handle for someone else. They reserve it for you in case you drop your Premium membership so you can revert back to it. So they’re holding it… for you… but they won’t forward it to your new URL.
If 𝕏 is already locking the old handle to your account, why on earth can’t they just redirect it? Why not have anyone who goes to "@ OldHandle" automatically land on "@ NewHandle" instead of thinking you disappeared? That one simple decision would protect years of work, links, collaborations, embedded posts on blogs, QR codes, printed material, everything.
🚦And it doesn’t stop there.
Search is broken too. When you search your own account, 𝕏 does not surface posts made under your old handle. Your own content, on your own profile, becomes harder to find. To pull up those older posts, you literally have to type your old handle into the search bar as if you’re searching for somebody else. How does that make sense in 2025 on a platform this big?
So we’ve got:
• Old handle turned into a dead-looking link instead of a simple redirect.
• Years of backlinks, watermarks, and branding now sending people to “this account doesn’t exist.”
• Your own older posts effectively hidden from your own handle search unless you manually query the previous @.
This is not some complex edge case. This is basic product thinking. If you offer handle upgrades, you have to think through identity continuity, search, links, and long-term branding. That’s the entire point of a handle.
Why is something this simple not clearly thought through before launch? Why does X keep rolling out half-finished features and asking users to live with the consequences while they “iterate”?
All Premium and Premium Business members now have full access to the Handle Marketplace.
Just open your Premium Hub on any device and tap the new link.
We hope you find the handle you've always wanted.
