Part of the recent response from Sheffield University in response to my FOI regarding their recent trials .. “the University holds no recorded confirmation that the findings were formally shared with or reviewed by these bodies.” the government has not formally accepted their findings nor has it asked for further trials into the illnesses caused by degrading mesh migration
1. Did the University of Sheffield accept KU Leuven's findings without questioning potential long-term health issues arising from plastic mesh migration and degradation in surrounding organs, nerves, or tissues (e.g. inflammation, infection, or chronic pain)?
SU Answer - “The University of Sheffield holds no recorded information on this matter. As previously stated, the animal study predates the material characterisation presented in the article in question, including the identification of particles within sheep tissues. Consequently, researchers at the University would not have been in a position to question long-term health impacts, as the animals had been sacrificed and the trial had concluded many years before the data presented in the article became available.”
2. Did the University share these findings with UK government bodies, such as the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), or the Patient Safety Commissioner?
SU Answer - “The article was published as open access and is therefore available to all. While it is possible that the organisations listed may have read the article, the University holds no recorded confirmation that the findings were formally shared with or reviewed by these bodies.”
