Today I interviewed an amazing guy called Wayne to join the board of RIVIR. It was a very humbling experience.
An engineer by training, he has worked across and invested in so many fascinating engineering and business projects in his career. Including his latest area of focus - employing AI to accelerate local government processes.
But it was the stories from his spare time that made me realize how aligned he was to RIVIR's aspirations...
He once climbed to the top of Mt Everest, just to help a good friend get there after he had lost both his legs when stuck in a snow cave on Mt Cook. Wayne designing his friend some very special prosthetic legs for the climb - and he even carried a spare leg to the top for him in his backpack.
He also ran the Britten motorcycle factory and racing team. The Britten was an incredible machine, made right here in Christchurch (by my childhood hero John Britten). It won the
@DAYTONA Battle of the Twins in the 1990s, beating the factory teams of
@harleydavidson,
@HondaRacingGLB ,
@BMWMotorradMoSp, and
@DucatiMotor on a shoestring budget. This beautiful bike also set the Fastest Top Speed at the Isle of Man TT. - A perfect example of the famous Kiwi
#number8wire innovation culture - that has also helped us build RIVIR.
Wayne also decided to reengineer a massive lake system here in
#Canterbury #NZ, just out of a sense of civic duty, to stop the sea water ingress that had caused massive toxic algal blooms for generations. His work successfully eliminated the lake's toxicity for future generations of human visitors and wildlife to enjoy.
Oh, and he also helped make the absolutely brilliant film, The World's Fastest Indian (2005), starring Sir
@AnthonyHopkins. Not only did he hand make the wonderful streamlined bikes seen in the film, he even rode one at over 110mph on the
@BonnevilleMST Salt Flats of
#Utah to help record the film's sound track.
The universe can throw a lot of challenges your way when you're building a company like
@RIVIRspaceIoT - at the speed of
@SpaceX . If I can convince him, I honestly can't think of a steadier had to have at the tiller than Wayne. What a guy.
