been messing around with some simple meshing exercises so i can try to understand real FEA when you import a part in abaqus and hit mesh, the software defaults to a "Free" mesh , which is basically unstructured elements that wrap your geometry like shrink wrap on a weird shaped object1 iuts fast and easy , but from an analysis perspective you've just handed the solver a bag of random puzzle pieces and told it to figure out your stresses one of the main problems with letting Aabaqus (or any FEA/CFD package) auto mesh your part is element quality, or more accurately, the lack of it deformed elements get crushed into corners and that can lead to high skew, terrible aspect ratios, the list goes on as I understand it, the solver tries to interpolate displacement fields across these distorted shapes and ends up manufacturing stress concentrations that dont actually exist in the real world, or physically can't For serious problems (nonlinear materials, contact scenarios, etc...), or anything you'd actually stake a design decision on, your mesh quality can be the difference between a solution that converges and one that crashes at 23% with some goofy unhelpful error message partitioning geometry to get a clean structured hex mesh takes time upfront unlike my example which was pretty straightforward, doing this on complex parts can eat up hours. But it buys you accuracy and faster solve times on the back end, which matters when you're trying to validate actual physics instead of generating colorful stress plots
