#oldstructures #puritan_300

This day, 121 years ago, Jamsetji Tata opened a hotel that was in his words "worthy of Bombay" -the Taj Mahal Hotel. The palatial hotel had American fans, German elevators, Turkish baths and English butlers. . . . #todayinmumbaishistory #tajmahalhotel #gatewayofindia #mumbai #tajpalace #jamsetjitata #mumbaihotel #mumbaihistory #mumbaiheritage #oldstructures #architecture @TajHotels @Khaki_Tours

Felt like doing some pyrography of an old window in Barkerville's historic town with added flowers. Then transparent acrylic over top 😃 #pyrography #artist #oldwindow #bcart #oldstructures #burningtool #galleryartist #smallpainting

I toured this one w/ Dave Fischetti in the late 90s. He did an evaluation in 1987 and got it nominated. In 2001 he designed new abutments. Interestingly, it appears that he also added vertical rods.

I try to add colour as often as I can too. It’s easy enough if you’re drawing digitally.

I miss the old t-square days, really. We use a few different gray-scale line types and hatches for existing. And we do use color sometimes. I like it.

The crack above the radius change at the right is not mirrored at the left so is it possible that the right hand abutment rotated backwards and most of the crack comes from that rotation, not from the sag? If the rotation was continuing, an engineer might well feel it was not saf

First the basket handle. Pretty sure this is there centred, not elliptical. The outer 3/16 of the span more or less constant radius. Actually, it’s ales than that because I think this is span/rise =4 so main radius = span and side radius = 3/16 span.

Like most old pictures, that one will stand some serious zooming. It demands a long story of its own.

All that was worked out by William Froude in the 1850s. He was Brunel’s resident engineer on the Bristol to Exeter line but boss realised his mathematical ability. Froude worked out how to build and test a model ship and work out the power demand for the full size vessel.
